Schitterend news

27-09-2013 Schitterend listed in Golden Hands; a Dutch book about crafts.

I am proud to announce that Schitterend is included, as a flat glass artist and master gilder, in the (Dutch) national book on crafts 'Golden Hands. This book is an initiative of the Dutch Centre for Folk Culture and Intangible Heritage ( VIE ) and is published on the occasion of the Year of Crafts 2013-2014. The book is connects with the UNESCO Convention for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage. ‘Crafts’ is one of the five domains for which this organization demands worldwide attention.

UNESCO endorses crafts, individually and handmade, instead of modern mass production. However, in many places in the world, also in The Netherlands, knowledge and skills of crafts rapidly disappear. With this as a starting point VIE began with an inventory of Dutch crafts and artisans. Schitterend was one of the 40 selected crafts, since Schitterend is the only flat glass artist in The Netherlands (and far beyond ) that offers a full range of authentic decorative painting techniques, including gilding, silvering and etching .

At a contact day in Utrecht , early 2013, VIE took interviews with the selected artisans and made professional photos. This resulted in the book ‘Golden Hands , crafts in The Netherlands' . The introduction of the book was on 20 September in Culemborg, in the middle of The Netherlands, where it was presented to Riet de Leeuw (Ministry of Education, Culture and Science). Schitterend is honored by the recognition for his decorative crafts.
